About the project.

Litegreen has been appointed by Wrexham Council to provide impartial, expert guidance and assistance to x10 Wrexham care facilities in their efforts to combat climate change and realise cost savings.

This initiative will involve collaborating with ten settings, encompassing tasks such as assessing carbon footprints, devising decarbonisation strategies, exploring retrofitting options, promoting behavioral change initiatives, and bolstering business sustainability.

By taking the lead and implementing carbon reduction plans, care settings can not only reduce their carbon emissions but also achieve significant cost benefits, all while supporting the ongoing development of future carbon reduction strategies.

This approach aligns with the Social Care in Wales Decarbonisation Routemap, which aims to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030, contributing to both environmental and financial sustainability.

Achieving Net Zero: A Vital Goal for Health and Care Professionals.

In today's world, where the impact of climate change is becoming increasingly evident, the concept of achieving "Net Zero" emissions has taken center stage. But what exactly does Net Zero mean, and why is it crucial for those working in the health and care sectors?

Understanding Net Zero:

Net Zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. In simpler terms, it means that the total emissions we release into the air are completely offset by actions that remove or reduce those emissions. Achieving Net Zero is a fundamental step toward mitigating climate change and its devastating effects on our planet.

Why Net Zero Matters for Health and Care Professionals:

  1. Protecting Public Health: Climate change is linked to various health risks, including heat-related illnesses, vector-borne diseases, and air pollution-related respiratory issues. By striving for Net Zero, health and care professionals can contribute to a healthier environment for their communities.
  2. Resilience to Climate-Related Disasters: As climate change intensifies, so do extreme weather events. Health and care facilities must be prepared to provide essential services during and after disasters. Reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability can enhance resilience and ensure uninterrupted care.
  3. Reducing Healthcare Costs: Sustainable practices can lead to significant cost savings in healthcare operations. Energy-efficient facilities, reduced waste, and cleaner transportation options can translate into lower expenses for healthcare providers, ultimately benefiting patients.
  4. Leading by Example: Health and care professionals are trusted figures in their communities. By embracing Net Zero initiatives, they can inspire others to take action and create a ripple effect of sustainability-conscious behavior.
  5. Aligning with Global Goals: Net Zero is a critical component of international climate agreements like the Paris Agreement. Participating in these efforts not only helps tackle the global climate crisis but also demonstrates commitment to global cooperation.

Taking Action:

Health and care professionals can play a pivotal role in achieving Net Zero by:

  • Reducing Carbon Footprints: Implementing energy-efficient practices, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and minimising waste.
  • Advocating for Change: Using their expertise and influence to advocate for sustainable healthcare policies and practices within their institutions and communities.
  • Educating and Empowering: Raising awareness among colleagues, patients, and the public about the health benefits of Net Zero initiatives and encouraging sustainable lifestyles
